Acacia is hard-wearing, with a grain that runs pale gold to deep brown across a single board. Every surface is sanded through the grades until it is smooth to the hand, not just to the eye. Boards are picked for grain and strength, then planed, cut and fitted by hand. The frame is squared and checked before the finish goes on, and again after. The finish is built up in thin layers so the grain stays visible rather than buried under paint. It measures 16 x 10 x 2 in (41 x 25 x 5 cm) and weighs about 1.9 kg.
